According to FIFA officials, as a result of complaints about the quality of pitches in Soccer World Cup 2006, Soccer World Cup 2010 could see the introduction of artificial turf.
'You can't rule out the possibility of games being played on artificial grass in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa,' FIFA media director Markus Siegler said in Berlin on 22 June 2006.
FIFA President Joseph Blatter has already mentioned in the past that natural grass was not necessarily the best surface, and 'maybe by 2010 we'll be ready (to switch).' 'We need a surface that's unaffected by the weather, and we are constantly gathering data and evaluating this,' Blatter has said.
Artificial turf was officially recognised by FIFA at the end of 2004.
